How is Recovery Coaching different than working with a Sponsor?
Sponsors focus only on recovery and working the steps. I’m not limited to a particular program or focusing just on your recovery. I focus on helping you with every area of your life that has been affected by your addiction. A Sponsor can be a great addition to Coaching. You can find more specifics here.
Will you work with me while I’m in a recovery home, therapeutic, boarding, or military school?
If you’d like to work together during the entire time there, we can certainly do so if the professionals you’re currently working with support this. I’d be more than happy to partner with them in your recovery, but will not work with you throughout your stay there if the team believes it interferes with your progress there. Your success there is most important to me so we can have a strong foundation to build on when you get home.
Will you be involved in my discharge planning?
Your transition home will be so much smoother if we start to work together before you make that transition. We’ll continue to meet after you transition home. I like to meet with you and your treatment team in person or via phone before you leave treatment to make that transition even easier.
What happens when I get home?
Typically when you first leave treatment I like to meet with you at least twice a week for at least the first month. Leaving the treatment environment where you’re surrounded by support 24/7 is tough and this is the time you’re at highest risk for relapse! Without the right support, some barely make it home before they relapse!
Can I meet with you more often when I first get home because I know it’s going to be hard?
If you’d like to meet more often than my current Coaching packages offer, let’s discuss customizing a package that works best for your unique needs. I recommend this especially if you have a pattern of relapsing after treatment.
What if I relapse during the Coaching process?
So long as you remain committed to your recovery, together we will try to get you back on the right path of recovery as quickly as possible. We’ll use your relapse as a learning opportunity. If you’re unable to quit using or drinking, we’ll need to discuss if Coaching is best for you as Coaching requires you to be committed to making progress and moving forward with your life.
If you need to return to treatment, we can work together throughout your treatment if the professionals there agree or we can pick up again once you transition out of treatment again.
Even though relapses are many times a part of recovery, they don’t have to be! The goal is for you to excel in your recovery so that relapses don’t happen!
I hate meetings and Sponsors! Are you going to make me go to meetings and get a Sponsor?
I believe the support of support group meetings and having a Sponsor can be very helpful for many people in combination with Coaching. However, I also understand that they aren’t for everyone. I know many people feel more like using or drinking after they leave meetings. I also know that a lot of young people feel out of place at meetings and with Sponsors who are older than them. Sometimes you can also connect with people that aren’t focused on recovery and are there for other reasons.
So, traditional meetings aren’t always effective. What’s most important is that you have a healthy support system and Coaching is part of that support. We’ll focus on what works best for you!
Do I need to attend outpatient treatment if I have a Recovery Coach?
Outpatient treatment can be an amazing experience to avoid the need for inpatient treatment or great support after inpatient treatment. Typically, I highly recommend both as Recovery Coaching and great outpatient treatment combined is the best option.
However, traditional outpatient treatment isn’t always helpful as sometimes it can connect a you to others who aren’t there with the intention of staying clean or sober. Many times instead of helping recovery, these places may lead to relapse due to the connections you can make at an outpatient group!
When it is agreed upon by families and professionals that outpatient isn’t the best option for a you, you’re often left with little support elsewhere which is even worse. You are an amazing candidate for Recovery Coaching! You can choose to meet with me more than once a week when you first get out of treatment.
What if I didn’t complete treatment because insurance or financial reasons?
The battle with insurance and managed care companies is one that I’m very familiar with. Most of the time, they only cover a certain number of days of treatment and then insist upon discharge—whether you’re ready or not. I realize that not everyone can afford to pay for expensive treatment without the help of insurance. Coaching is very cost effective and costs far less than self-paying for more inpatient treatment without making huge financial sacrifices that impact the entire family.
In my experience, just about the time when insurance companies quit paying for treatment is often about the same time when you’re just starting to make some real progress. If you’re committed to your recovery then this is a great time for you to transition to Recovery Coaching!
What if there is a different reason that I didn’t complete treatment?
Let’s talk! If you’re committed to your recovery, you could still be a great candidate for Recovery Coaching! Depending on your situation it may be the exact alternative you need!
